Hi all,
While the legislative battle is the most important one, there is another
branch of the battle against software patents taking place this year in the
free software community.
A new version of free software's core licence, the GNU GPL, is being
written. It can't make the software patent problem go away, but it should
do whatever is possible to reduce the harm for free software users and
developers.
A year-long public consultation was launched in January to assist this
drafting. If you folk have something to say about South African law, or
patents, or anything that affects the GPL, this is the year to say it.
